Custom is worth it when the process is the competitive advantage, when subscription costs scale faster than the value you get, or when the data has to stay under your own control.

Some shortcuts are correct — a manual step for a process that runs twice a month costs less than automating it. We record which shortcuts were taken and what would trigger revisiting them, so the decisions are inherited rather than rediscovered.
